Water Tower

The water tower sits atop the former J. B. White's Department Store, founded in 1874. It was one of the first department stores in the country and for many years the leading department store in Augusta. Located on Augusta's Broad Street, the last downtown store, which opened in 1925, was closed in 1978 when it was replaced with a new store at the mall. The store remained empty for nearly 30 years until a project to redevelop the building into condominiums, retail and office space was begun. Unfortunately, the project is only partially completed.

Upon close inspection of this image on the computer, I noticed that a bird had found its way into the frame. I'm not an orinithologist, so I can't tell what kind of bird - an egret, heron or crane perhaps? If you know, please enlighten me.

The man-made Augusta Canal was begun in 1845 to transport barges of cotten and goods. Today the Canal is a recreational area to be enjoyed like these kayakers.

Last week, I traveled to Athens, GA, located two hours west of Augusta to visit the State Botanical Gardens. The Garden is a 313-acre preserve set aside by the University of Georgia over forty years ago as a living laboratory for education, research, recreation. In 1908 the City of Augusta Forces built a levee (dirt and rocks) to protect the City from flooding, (by hand with mules for six years) but in 1929 the most significant flooding occurred which came over the existing levee structure and severely flooded downtown once again. In 1936, a Flood Control Act was passed and the Corps of Engineers rebuilt the levee, by mandate, to the height that it is now.

Another Musical Evening in the Appleby Garden

At last night's concert, Hotlanta Dixieland Jazz band performed an array of songs from Fats Waller, Hoagy Carmichael, Louis Armstrong and other dixieland greats. Audience choice made up the majority of  the program, making this an true audience participation event. Another great evening under the stars!

Appleby Library Garden Concert

Located in the Summerville Historic District, Appleby Library is a branch library of the East Central Georgia Regional Library System and is significant as an example of the Greek Revival style of architecture.

The house was constructed in 1830 and over the years, few changes were made to its exterior. Scott B. Appleby bought it in 1928 where it remained in the family until it was donated in 1954 to the Augusta City Council for use as a library. Dedication ceremonies took place in the gardens in 1955.

Appleby Library is a significant member of the Summerville Historic District as a neighborhood library offering many services including its summer outdoor concert series, “Evenings at the Appleby.”

Here, patrons are enjoying last Tuesday's program of classical music played by Jason Maynard & Friends in the Appleby Garden.
