The Riverwalk is located in downtown Augusta between the Savannah River and a historic levee that served to protect Augusta from the raging waters of the Savannah River. The raised portion of the Riverwalk shown here is atop the levee. Major floods occurred in 1908, 1919, 1921 and 1929. The levee was strengthen in 1929 and in 1954, Congress authorized the construction of Clarks Hill Dam, which was built upstream and controls the River's flow through Augusta and Savannah.
